Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)

Spiral: From the Book of Saw (Jigsaw Sequel) Film RiffSpiral: From the Book of Saw is a 2021 horror film written and directed by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger and produced by Darren Lynn Bousman. Saw 9 is the ninth film in the franchise. It stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson and explores police attempts to catch a Jigsaw copycat murderer. Exec producers include James Wan and Leigh Whannell, as well as Rock and the show's longtime cast member Kevin Greutert.

What is the story of Spiral about?

Meanwhile, a murder investigator called Fitch is kidnapped and put in a trap where he must pull his fingers off to prevent electrocution in a filling water basin; he too fails to escape and dies after ignoring a backup call from Banks some years previously. Because of his relationship with Fitch, several police assume Banks is to blame. The station is then visited by a package carrying a pig puppet and a portion of Schenk's tattooed flesh. A little vial inside the box leads the cops to a butcher shop that was originally a hobby business frequented by Banks and his father, retired chief Marcus Banks. When the squad arrives, they find a recording recorder and a skinned body identified as Schenk. Marcus decides to seek out the murderer himself and heads to a warehouse, where he is kidnapped. Garza is abducted and put in a trap in the precinct's cold storage, where she must slice her spinal chord with a blade to stop hot wax from a conduit from spilling down her face. She fails to do so, and when Banks finds her corpse, she dies from her injuries caused by the boiling hot wax.

Because Emmerson thinks Banks may be an ally, he gives him one more test, which consists of showing Marcus restrained in the air and having his blood slowly sucked out of him. Emmerson makes a call to 9-1-1 and tells the dispatcher that he is a civilian who is being chased by a gunman. As a consequence, the dispatcher sends a SWAT squad to the place where Emmerson is. He then tosses a handgun with a single cartridge over to Banks and gives him the option of either shooting a target that would rescue Marcus but enable Emmerson to escape, or shooting Emmerson and allowing Marcus to bleed to death from his wounds. Banks fires the target in an effort to rescue his father, which results in the loosening of his bindings and causes him to fall on the ground. Banks then starts to fight Emmerson. Marcus' bindings pull him up again shortly after the SWAT squad gets on the scene and accidentally set off a tripwire, which is why he continues to be held at an elevated position. The movement exposes a pistol that was attached to Marcus' arm, allowing the SWAT squad to mistake him for the gunman and end his life as a result of their error. As Emmerson runs away, Banks shouts helplessly in desperation.

Rock's character was originally supposed to be linked to Danny Glover's David Tapp from the previous film. Stolberg and Goldfinger decided against going this route since it failed the smell test. Bousman said in May 2021 that talks had taken place regarding bringing Costas Mandylor back as Mark Hoffman in a future film. Bousman and the crew debated whether or not Tobin Bell should reprise his role as Jigsaw until the last day of production, but they thought that having Bell back would make the film seem like a continuation of the Saw series rather than a standalone picture as it was intended. Because Jigsaw was killed off in the third picture, Bousman believed that previous films had done Jigsaw a disservice by utilizing flashbacks to bring him into the tale, and he didn't want to make the same error in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) or disrespect Bell's legendary portrayal. Bousman contemplated including Bell in Spiral: From the Book of Saw by having him perform a Johnny Cash song during the concluding scene, but decided against it because it was too gimmicky.

Because the film's killer is a Jigsaw knockoff who differs from the original, it was decided to replace Billy the Puppet with a new puppet in the form of Mr. Snuggles, as Bousman believed that if the original Jigsaw was replaced, the original puppet should be replaced as well, so the new killer could not be compared. Because the production feared that using Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles would raise questions about the killers' relationship, an early draft featured Jigsaw's voice only to be revealed as a digitally altered version of his voice, and the story originally had all the speeches as past recordings of Jigsaw's voice using words in a different order to show that the Spiral Killer had digitally rearranged the words. The producers tried to substitute Bell's voice with a new one for the murderer. Bousman tried out a variety of female, kid, and male sounds before deciding on the computer produced voice. Only two days before the sound mix was finished, the final voice for the picture was chosen.

Spiral (2021)'s backstage

Pre-production officially began on May 16, 2019. Darren Lynn Bousman, who previously directed the series, will return to direct the picture, which he will produce with Burg and Koules. While creating the plot treatment, Rock served as executive producer.

Burg and Koules said that the way Rock handled Saw was similar to what Eddie Murphy did in 48 Hrs. with buddy cop movies. This gave the Saw series a completely new look. Also, Bousman said that Spiral: From the Book of Saw had less violence and gore than the other films in the series. He said that gore and violence were his "gimmick" when he first started working on the Saw movies, but that they now serve the story, which is more about the characters, tension, and fear.

options for Spiral (2021)'s cast members

Rock has a starring role in the show as Detective Zeke Banks. Rock, Stolberg, and Goldfinger had conversations prior to writing the screenplay that led to the creation of the character. During these conversations, Rock was thinking about what he would do if he were the original Saw protagonist, Dr. Lawrence Gordon, and was forced to cut off his own foot. Eventually, the three of them came to the conclusion that it would be more interesting if Rock played a cop who was shunned by his fellow officers.

Samuel L. Jackson decided to portray Chief Marcus Banks because he wanted to do something new, such as the climax sequence in which his character is hung up like a marionette. Marisol Nichols was chosen as Captain Angie Garza; the character was initially designed for a male actress, but the filmmakers finally selected Nichols, who, while being a Saw fan, preferred to watch David Fincher's Seven instead of the prior films in preparation for the role. Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick in an effort to pursue an acting career on film and television after years of performing on stage, but was called back to portray Peter Dunleavy while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick.

Max Minghella, a lover of both horror and buddy-cop films, took on the part of William Schenk / The Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) Killer because he longed to feature in a picture with straightforward story-telling like the buddy police of his childhood like 48 Hrs., and when he read the screenplay, he thought it was that, as well as a Saw film.

How was Spiral shot?

On July 8, 2019, principal shooting started in Toronto, Ontario, under the working title The Organ Donor, with Jordan Oram acting as cinematographer. The cast of the film was announced to include Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols. Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake claimed that they believe Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock, together with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols, will make this picture utterly unique in the Saw canon and that they can't wait to unleash this surprising and scary new narrative on Saw fans. This was Saw at its most intense. On set, Rock contributed rewrites and entirely reworked his character's introductory sequence. According to Bousman, a sequence with a trap had to be deleted from the film because it was too gruesome.

Filming officially ended on August 28, 2019. Dev Singh finished the editing during post-production.

Who rated Spiral: From the Book of Saw?

Film reviewers commended Spiral: From the Book of Saw's efforts to change the franchise template, but felt it fails to help Saw recover relevancy.

On the website that aggregates reviews, Rotten Tomatoes, there are 221 reviews total, and 37 percent of those reviews are positive, giving the movie an average rating of 5.1 out of 10. The general opinion among the site's reviewers was that Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) hints to an exciting new path for the Saw series, even if the bloody whole is rather less than the sum of its parts.

CinemaScore rated the picture a B- on a scale of A+ to F, while PostTrak reported that 63 percent of audience members gave it a good rating, with 43 percent indicating they would definitely recommend it.

A film reviewer said that the movie takes a couple of unexpected turns, but given that it's a thriller that's connected to the subject of police immorality, the movie handles that theme in a manner that's bizarrely offtopic and almost garishly generic.

A separate film reviewer said the script maintained the grizzled-cop-movie tone and creates distinctive characters, but the tale was repetitive, the mystery was annoyingly obvious, and the inventive deaths were less imaginative than before. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) compromised fun for respectability and failed at both.

The finale was panned by a film reviewer, who rated the movie one out of five stars and said that he believed it was hurried, half-assed, clumsily written, and worst of all, progressively uninteresting. He gave the movie one star. He concluded his analysis by stating that the game was finished.

Spiral (2021): From the Book of Saw is likely to offend both Saw devotees and mainstream moviegoers, according to one film reviewer. It's a poor rip-off of the show, failing to match even the most basic aesthetic and narrative standards. It's also a bad movie in general, as it tries to tell a socially relevant story but fails miserably. Spiral (2021) is barely a Saw film, he said, delivering only briefly on the visceral thrill of mutilation and none of the series' other tenets. It's also the most artless, tactless version of what it actually is: a snubbed pilot episode for a rote cop drama.

Another film reviewer said that it isn't precisely a waste of a premise. The franchise, on the other hand, does not need reinvention. Spiral: From the Book of Saw gets some fresh blood with Rock's participation, but after a promising start, it merely becomes a really good Saw movie with some larger stars than usual—one whose jaundiced lighting and procedural narrative more closely resemble David Fincher's Se7en than anything else. Consider the game a failure if the goal was to determine whether a new approach on a long-running property could withstand being cut and diced by the sequel machine.
